  • Telecommunications is about communications and from it comes exchanges that enhance and enrich our knowledge of each other. It has been called a web, and from it can be woven a tapestry that is truly magnificent and varied in depth and purpose.

Over the last several years, Alta Elementary School has been weaving a tapestry of history, heritage, and legends. We welcome contributions to enable growth into a multi-cultural heritage and history that all can share. To add to this depth we are adding the land, agricultural history, stories of the earth, how crops are nurtured and grow. From the land comes the most fundamental of human relationships and exchanges, the food and bread we eat, a foundation that all are current technologies still rely upon.

Telecommunications lends itself ideally to integrated curriculum. This project represents that with a variety of ways that schools can participate and suggested activities for science, literature, history, mathematics, and language arts. Activities can easily be modified to fit a wide range of grade levels and curriculum needs. Since I teach up to 7 grade levels, I tend to plan activities that can be greatly modified to suit individual needs. Change lessons to suit your teaching style, grade level, and students' needs. I appreciate feedback of ideas you enjoyed using or samples of ones you develop to add. As your students' work develops, please send me your web location to build connections. Those with similar work who desire to build links between projects please send an e-mail with an URL.

    Deadlines for 1997-98

There are no formal deadlines at this point, because Alta is currently doing two extensive internet projects (Patty Reed's Doll & Wildflowers of the World) that will extend until June 1998. I will post new work on this project as it is received and send URLS in newsletters to participants.

This project is open to any teachers worldwide who are interested in participating. How you choose to participate will depend on the age and ability of your students and what your goals are for the project. Please view guidelines so you can see what my expectations are for formal participation. Your school may chose to participate in one area or several. Your participation can be on a short term or long term basis.

Major events in 1996-97 were an interview with Victor Davis Hanson (author of The Other Greeks and Fields Without Dreams)., Korean visitors, Roger Williams, and the Read-In. Only part of the many internet activities we do at Alta are ever formally posted. Teachers who join projects receive newsletters and updates on events and activities.

I post some of my lesson plans and activities. I will be delighted to post any additional lessons and materials other teachers others might design . Credit will be given and links to your sites will be added.

View suggested lesson plans and materials.

    Connecting Schools' Work

This project is part of Alta's school site. All schools that join will be given credit and retain copyright for any materials that are posted on Alta's site. My ideal hope would be that each school builds their own site and makes connections between work.

The power and strength of such collaborative efforts goes far beyond building links. International friendships create a tremendous resource for education and humanity that must be experienced to realize their benefits.

    Ways to Participate:

    1. Add to previous projects

  • Igniting the Pioneer Spirit

    In 1994-95, Alta did
Igniting the Pioneer Spirit. This is about studying family history and stories. You could add to the collection and read many fascinating stories about pioneers that children have known. These are lesson plans that were developed for that project.

  • History, Heritage, Legends, the Land:

This was work developed in 1996-97. It is a project that has the potential to grow for years to come. I have many suggested activities here. If you have a connection you would like to add, please send an URL. Many universities do research with agriculture and may wish to make connections or post requests for K-12 students to help with field research in their communities. The same type of connections could be made with history and anthropology.

Local history and heritage can be explored, students might share or write original legends that describe local area, history, or natural resources, agricultural techniques and history can be studied and shared. This can be appropriate from primary grades through college. Joining this includes participating in the following by contributing information from your area.

Teachers wishing to make connections with schools can send a note that will be posted to all participants.

  • World Fruit Basket:

This focuses on agriculture in your area. It can be factual and scientific, and/or historical and legendary. How you chose to contribute will depend on how it fits your curriculum. The amount of time and effort can be short or extensive. One participant did a seven month project growing chiles that won second place at the state fair in New Mexico.

To simplify the scope of such a massive project, Alta has chosen to focus on fruits grown around the world. Fruit is an integral part of the Reedley, it is called The World's Fruit Basket. Agriculture is the financial lifeblood of this community. The farmland around Reedley is some of the most productive in the world.

Research and focus on one fruit or assign groups of students to work with different crops. Possibilities include agricultural history, management, pest control, crop yields, and other statistical information to gather and build a resource reflecting crops around the world. Other ideas could include sharing recipes or doing experiments with fruits that are easily grown like: chiles, zucchini, or tomatoes. This could easily be applied to mathematics and science classes and a wide range of grade levels. Ideally, teachers will e-mail lessons and work as it develops to share with other participants and get global responses and feedback.

If your area has no major fruit crops, you can chose to focus your work and research on a crop or animal that represents your community better. Please send URLS and e-mail to share as your work develop. Students delight in seeing their hard work recognized and acknowledged.

    3. Join New Internet Projects "Patty Reed's Doll" and "Wildflowers of the World"

    Patty Reed's Doll
is currently a closed project traveling across the United States. Since wagon trains were traditionally isolated as they traveled, this project is attempting to simulate that experience. The finished project will be posted during the summer of 1998. Please send an e-mail if you would like to receive information at end of project.

Wildflowers of the World is open to any schools desiring to feature wildflowers that bloom in their community or surrounding area. Links will be made between participating schools and countries. Both southern and northern hemispheres are represented. This project will continue to blossom until Dec. 31, 1998.

    3. Design part of an 1998-99 International Anthology .

Patty Reed's Doll is proving to be a very fascinating twist on Travel Buddies theme. I am looking for HIGHLY DEDICATED teachers who are interested in developing similar anthologies for their states, countries, or provinces. More information and ideas will be sent on request. Please send a direct e-mail indicating your interest.
