Time Frame to Complete: One to three weeks or longer depending on what additional activities your students choose to do.
Grade levels: K-12
Even though this project is no longer formally going, I view any projects designed as ongoing and open to new participants and contributors. My only request is that teachers using materials I have designed please site sources and send URLS of work they develop to connect to this project.
Materials can also be placed upon this site. To do so request html template and send completed pages as attachments by e-mail to be formally uploaded on server.
Please formally register. I would like a certain amount of basic information from all schools participating
in this project. This will be used to chart and graph crops and create
resource information that can be used in a variety of ways by schools all
over the world. If you have suggestions on how to improve and add to this,
please send me your ideas. This is suitable for ANY GRADE level.
I would like ALL GRADE levels participating to send this information.
For some schools this might be ALL the participation they chose to have
in the project. This information will be used for other suggested activities.
The more schools that supply this information, the more interesting the
project will become.
This can be done as a group response. It does not have to be done in English
by students, but I would appreciate translations (if possible). Please
send by e-mail to KCUSD@gsn.org.
1. What is a common fruit that is grown in your area? (If more than one
class at a school is participating one or more crops can be used). If there
are NO fruits grown locally, chose another crop that is.
2. Name specific geographical areas where this crop is grown (if possible
make a graphic map of your area and mark these areas, you could also mail
a map to have scanned).
3. Is this crop exported to other countries?
4. Describe your climate:
5. How do farmers irrigate this crop? Do they rely on rainfall? Canals?
Drip irrigation? Be as specific as possible.
6. Is this crop grown with modern technology and equipment or using methods
that have been used for centuries?
The following are suggestions for expanding the information you provide
about your crop. It may trigger some additional ideas.
7. What do you like about this fruit? What special dishes do you make
using it? Do you have recipes you can share?
8. Are there any special customs surrounding this fruit? Is it served
at special festivals or holidays (for example: pumpkin pie and cranberries
are often an American tradition at Thanksgiving)?
9. What type of pests affect the production of this crop? How do farmers
control this? Do they use pesticides?
10. How does weather affect growth yields of the crop ( ex.: rain has
a direct cause and effect relationship on raisin production but doesn't
affect the wine industry as much, unexpected hail storms can cause damage
to many crops)?
11. Find and chart growth and yield productions of at least 2 farms in
your area over a 10 year period. What patterns do you see?
Please encourage other teachers or schools you know to participate in this
part of the project as the greater the response is, the more fascinating
and useful this project will be in creating a global resource.
