Alta Elementary is proud to be part of the historic
Cyberfair '96. We hope that visitors to the site
will come to the area to see its natural scenic beauty and
friendly rural charm.
Alta Elementary School is located in the middle of fruit orchards
in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. Kings Canyon Unified
School District encompasses an area of approximately 800 square
miles. The Kings River flows through
the city of Reedley and the surrounding countryside and provides
many recreational activities for visitors. The district starts in
the foothills and winds up highway 81 to Kings Canyon National
Park. Clear days at the school offer a spectacular vista of the
majestic snow capped Sierras.
The area is world renown for its wide variety of
stone fruit and is called "The World's
Fruit Basket." Reedley's natural scenic beauty is unparelled in
early spring (February and March) when countless blossoms perfume
the air and color the countryside in shades of pink and white.
Many visitors come to travel "The Blossom
Trail" by cars or bicycle tours.
Although the second largest community in Fresno County, Reedley
still retains the charm and serenity of more rural communities and
attracts many residents because of this. Many historic
buildings grace its charming main street (G Street) which has
many boutiques, shops, gift shops, and an art gallery that
features local artists. The community embraces a wide variety of
ethinc groups. A different group is featured every month at the
Reedley Historical Museum. The friendliness, relaxed life style,
and ever changing countryside attract many visitors and residents
to the area.
Many students from Alta school of all
grade levels have contributed articles of historic relevance about
Reedley and the surrounding area. This project has attracted a
wide range of community support and interest. It is providing a
learning process for educators, students and other business people
in the community. In all, well over 100 individuals have helped
contribute in some way. (Since this page was initially developed
the amount of individuals who have contributed has increased.
Alta's site is continually evolving and adding new dimensions each
year.)
Stories and input take on a global perspective as activities like
this help students realize they are really part of a "global
community." Part of last year's telecommunication project was
included which has been published and is on the web. "Landmarks"
encompasses a wide range for this web site. This site hopes to
reflect what is unique and special about Reedley. Agricultural and
scenic attactions are a major part of our historic heritage and
landmarks. These are as much "landmarks" as the historic buildings
and sites in Reedley. Other schools in the area and community
groups have been invited to contribute to the site so expect
new additions, images, and information.
