Cyberfair 2000-2001
Setting Our Paths for the Stars

A Celebration of Our Local and Global Communities

Read our Project Narrative

Alta's Internet Projects are continually growing. This site shows a fraction of actual work done. Alta's explorations began in 1994, and have developed into a unique blend of history and natural resources with connections across the United States and around the globe. We welcome collaborative efforts with educators around the world. Please let us know if you find the projects useful or wish to make links to various projects.

This Cyberfair project integrates Internet projects from 1999-2001. The main theme is celebrating community and diversity. Children shared about significant people and organizations of the past and present who help to make a difference in the community and beyond. This project is continually growing and will continue developing long beyond Cyberfair.

Special highlights include the "Rails to Trails" project in Reedley , "International Fest," Travel Buddy projects, America Quest, MayaQuest, AustraliaQuest, Arctic Challenge, Progressive Story, North Star, and more. The stars we are reaching for are those of our past, our present, and our future and how students can set their goals on making a powerful lasting contribution to share.

Included in this are links to work by Reedley Historical Society. The goals for this are long term and represent the efforts and dedication of many individuals in the area. It will continue to be expanded and added to long after Cyberfair to help support the community. This will eventually include many historical photos and interviews from community members.

Celebrating our Local Community

Students are working on additional reports that will be online probably after Cyberfair competition. Links to country reports.

Reedley: A Study of Ethnic Heritage

Consent for online access by Reedley Historical Society.

Alta is delighted to finally have this historic document online! The long term goal is to add historic images and additional stories and links to this so it can grow in an online format.

International Fest has become our annual celebration of the richness of ethnic diversity and global friendships. Next celebration scheduled for May 4, 2001.

Current exchanges have involved Australia, Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, Japan, Netherlands, Slovakia,South America, Zimbabwe (and others) and multiple states in U.S.

International Fest

This project is devoted to celebration of international friendships. The purpose is to promote cultural awareness and actively encourage children to become "ambassadors" in promoting international peace and harmony.

Each participating school is encouraged to develop their own unique celebration to share. Whether folding peace cranes in Japan or having a fiesta in Canada, the focus is on celebrating the global friendships and harmony that can develop from classroom collaboration.

Read MayaQuest postcards and Alta Students solid Gold Star Responses during the 5 weeks of the Quest.

Seeing the experience may tempt teachers to attempt following the next Quest in the fall of 2001.

Join Quesla eGroup

Students at Alta Elementary followed MayaQuest 2001. The Quest is over but the discoveries are still happening! The Quest Team hosted our travel buddy Quesla as they trekked through Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. The journal will continue after the quest down to Ecuador, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. From there....? During the Quest, daily updates were posted as the team searched for clues to the mystery of why the ancient Maya cities were abandoned.

Out 55,000 classrooms around the world, Alta tied with Walnut Street for Gold Stars every day! Check out Vitali's dilemma & Walnut Street's. Congratulations to Walnut Street, what an outstanding site!

Students at Alta Elementary enjoyed participating in AustraliaQuest in the fall of 2000. Their exploration began the first day of the school year hosting Olympic Travel Buddies from Sydney, September 15 festivities, followed the dreamline of the Aborigines with the Quest Team, and culminated in a Corrorrboree near Thanksgiving. Our buddies arrived home in February and we are still working with materials to share on our Web site.

Students at Alta Elementary enjoyed America Quest during March 2000. Check out some of the student work influenced by our exploration of Native Americans and the mystery of the Four Corners region and the ancient Anasazi.

Arctic Challenge

Students in Room 11 followed Jon Waterman's exciting adventures in the Northwest Territories during the 1998-99 school year. They learned about the Inuit, celebrated the returning of Nunavut (the Land) to the Inuit (the people) by the Canadian government on April 1, 1999. This project is part of a collaborative effort with Adventure Online.

During Alta's second International Fest held February 25, 2000 an online chat was held with Jon Waterman, students, and guests.

Progressive Story

Lone Nielson's students began this story in Denmark. This is a wild international story with 16 chapters done by school children all over the world.

Alta's "Wild Valley Rangers" wrote chapter 10 and the conclusion to this mystery in the Bermuda Triangle. This project began the 1998-99 school year at Alta and students began the 1999-2000 year writing the conclusion for the project.

Art by Jacob, Gerardo, & Tyeson

Peter Reynold's wonderful story and artistic style has become a theme of the classroom and daily activities of the students. The North Star story fits perfectly into the explorations that are constantly happening as each student reaches for their own potential. It reflects in their writing, their artwork, and their own unique perceptions of themselves and their journey through life.

A sample of the impact is seen in their essays on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Yet the starlight reflects throughout each of their projects and links will be found in many areas.

Travel Buddies

Lucky & Snuitje enjoy the Blossom Trail

Students in Room 11 have sent out international travel buddies Fauna and Scotty , Sarah and Tuffy, Lucky, Webster, and now Quesla to other countries.

They have hosted Snuitje from Haarlem, the Netherlands, Rasmus Klump from Denmark, and Olympic Travel buddies from Australia. Parts of the exchanges are online.

Webster & Quester just headed to Japan.

Wildflowers of the World

This project is not formally a part of Cyberfair 2001 and should not be part of Peer Review.

Into every life a little rain must fall, from it comes all the wonders of creation each spring.

This is a simple project other schools might be intrigued in adding to. Most recent additions are from Ecuador and a teacher participating in MayaQuest & Quesla exchange. Also enjoy Judith Bennett's California Wildflower Photos.

Mystery Card

This was a fun simple project that flourished through the summer and fall of 1999 when the card disappeared. It has never resurfaced, but a wonderful story began, original artwork was added, and a unfinished tale emerged that was poetic, peaceful, and mysterious. Follow the links and add to the experience...

Originally the site would not be known until the card arrived that is no longer possible, so the story has been unveiled.

"Rails to Trails" (Reedley Parkway) project in Reedley is special to students in Alta's Tech Club. They visited the parkway site prior to construction and followed its progress closely. A long term goal was to raise $500 to donate to this project. This goal was realized in October, 2000.

Students originally began taking images of the development of the trail. The city has the progress of this project online. At a future date additional history will be added. Last year a historic book on the railroad history of the area was published.
