I understand your frustration! Teaching to a test that is at an
inappropriate level for the students taking the test is absurd and a
total waste of time!! Your time and their time would be better spent
having them work with Logo. You mentioned that your school is ill
equipped. Doesn't your school have Chapter I funds? My school doesn't
get Chapter I funds because we don't have enough low achieving students.
The schools in my district that have many low achieving students have
computers in every classroom and several computer labs. They spend many
thousands of dollars on computers and software every year.

Thanks John for the comments. It helps me to vent my spleen about this
subject. Our school is Chapter I (now called Title I) but we have not yet
received any computers. We had a lab full of Apple IIE's that was seldom used
and was not available for use by individual teachers or classes. Those old
Apples have now been spread around the school. This is the only technology in
the school other than my room. Up until three weeks ago the secretaries in the
main office were still using electric type writers.
I bought a lab from a Catholic school last summer. Old IBM XT's. They are
old but the kids still love them. I asked the District to purchase Logo for PC
last September- no results yet! Ohio is installing labs in schools up through
the 4th grade level. We sere promised Internet access but so far no results. I
hooked up e-mail on a 200 ft. phone extension cord. My class can get on-line
but text only because we are using an old 286 that I found in a trash dumpster
(no joke). I installed a used 14,400 modem, but the 286 can't run Netscape
because it only has a 20 meg harddrive hence text only. I also downloaded UBC
Logo from the net but so far have been unsuccessful getting it to run. I'm
actually teaching a class for the district to teachers who want to learn how to
use "junk computers" in their classrooms. The PC's have made a world of
difference in my classroom and in the attitude of my students. Things are
inproving. I started to install a mouse on each computer but discovered that
the students were stealing the roller balls out of the mice as fast as I could
install them, so I had to put them all away for now.
Thanks for the suggestions and just listening.
Mike
