One trick I discovered is that although the "merge" command actually
replaces rather than merges your shapes, you can in fact copy custom shapes
one at a time between projects via the clipboard. Click on a shape to select
it, Edit-Copy, open the next project, select a blank (or unwanted) shape,
paste. Magic. So I use generally use merge only to import pages, and I copy
the shapes and procedures via the clipboard.
