LOGO-L> working with Logos and at risk teenagers

Hello!
I was involved this summer teaching a group of economically and academically
disadvantaged teenagers. A few were highschool drop outs, many from very
unstable families or foster homes. We worked with Microworlds, Lego Dacta,
Brick Logo and Star Logo. It was an intensive 7 week program 7 hours a day.
Participants were paid minimum wage to learn.

Now I am doing some thinking about what they learned and what I learned. I am
thinking about how I might continue to work with them - long distance (via
telecommunications, video conferencing). We are about 300 miles apart. I
would be interested in hearing from other people in the logo world who may
have had similar experiences setting up and running projects for
disadvantaged teenagers - and trying to see some of the short and long term
effects on their lives that may be possible with this type of program. Also,
has anyone acted as a mentor to a teenager via e-mail and found that this
method of guiding, supporting - connecting worked to keep the teenager
engaged and excited about their projects? Many of these teenagers don't have
great communication or writing skills.

Please send me e-mail if you have had experiences that may relate to this -
or if you know of good articles or books that may relate. I will share my
results with the whole list!

Thanks,
Laura Allen
