I have been invited by English faculty at school to demonstrate what
MicroWorlds can do in the realm of language. I am a little uncertain as to the
best first demonstration, since my teaching is in Maths/Science areas, not
language.
Here is my proposed demonstration, based on the little I have read of
'Exploring Language with Logo' by Goldenberg and Feurzeig. I am seeking
feedback if this would be the best first up demo for a Language faculty, who
have never seen MicroWorlds before. Please post what you think would be better
demonstrations or improvements of what I have in mind.
My idea: Who is writing the poetry?
based on Exploration 2.2 in Goldenberg and Feurzeig (p.35)
1) Create a textbox, size it
2) Hatch some turtles, put some shapes on page from shapes centre
3) set background to a colour you like
4) write some cinquain's about the shapes you have put on the page,
examples --
cars
speeding luxury
helping us move
travelling, driving, quickly, conveniently
transport
cats
feline aristocracy
purring and staring
quite and graceful predators
ferocious
explain cinquain structure:-
TOPIC: a one word topic, title or subject
DESCRIPTION: a two word description or alternate image of the topic
ACTION: a three word expression of an action related to the topic
FEELING: a four words expression of a feeling or evaluation of the topic
SUMMARY; A one word alternate title or summary of lines 2 through 4.
5) Next write procedures on the procedure page that will recombine a number of
cinquains into random variations ....
to topic
op pick [ [cars] [cats] ]
end
to description
op pick [ [speeding luxury] [feline aristocracy] ]
end
etc. etc.
to cinq
pr topic
pr description
pr action
pr feeling
pr summary
end
This is just one idea -- if you know of better ones for an intro then please
let me know.
