I asked a similar question when one day I was staring at the dot of an i trying to see how far on either side I could recognize adjacent letters and words. To my surprise, I discovered that my vision was full of blind spots and distortions. This led to my realization (what an interesting word) that my vision was anything but an accurate representation of the world, and my brain was doing an incredible job of making sense by filling in literally hundreds of gaps. This led to another question that if so much of what I perceive is fabricated in my brain, how can I possibly know what is real, or put differently, what is reality, but an assembly of mind and physics? How does an electric light work? You'll have to ask the particle physicists that one. The answer(s) may be surprising and unsettling.
