Dear Fellow Logo Lovers, As a newcomer to the list, permit me to introduce myself (as invited by John in his welcome mail). I have been teaching Mathematics (Years 7 -12 and some Tertiary level) for many years, and began keeping track of what computers were doing in education in 1982. Consequently, I knew more than most of the teaching staff when it was decided that this wonderful technology should be incorporated into the curriculum; so I was gradually shifted from Mathematics to Computing Studies and Information Technology. I am sure this is a familiar story for many. Then I really had to set about learning! And here I am - delighted with what logo offers, through MicroWorlds, for learning various computing skills, problem solving and more. My school is Abbotsleigh - which is a private girls' school (Years 3 - 12) in the leafy northern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. We are mainly Macintosh for curriculum purposes. My other major interest is the Internet and all the Web technologies and its use for publication of student work in the safe environment of our intranet. I have been pleased to learn about HTML-LOGO and am waiting for the day when the students' animated projects can be loaded. I have enjoyed involvement with virtual classroom projects and helped girls participate in Web Design competitions. I have a little experience with Lego Logo but mostly use MW to for simulations, animations and problem solving. At present we are attempting a simulation with a Year 7 group studying the context area of computer controlled systems - they need to represent the flow of traffic and pedestrians in one-way and two-way streets, so that every one survives! I shall post a simple request to the list today . . . . I am also trying to come to grips with the more complicated programming required to produce fractals as an extension activity with Year 8 Mathematics classes. Because I managed to master iterations and variables, I am actually having more succes with this than the pedestrians! It is not always easy being self-taught - one sometimes misses a simple basic concept - or gets an idea round the wrong way from the start! I have joined this list hoping to learn more "turtle" language than is included in the manuals, so that I can complete the more challenging tasks we set for ourselves. I am a little concerned that what I have read since joining the list this week is way ahead of where I am at . . however, I expect to be mailing specific requests when I meet stumbling blocks - which is a regular event. Best wishes to you all Janette Emmerson in the Land DownUnder Abbotsleigh, Sydney, NSW Australia --------------------------------------------------------------- Please post messages to the Logo forum to logo-l@gsn.org.
