Clare, I agree with Marion that lots of physical activities are needed to begin Logo with early childhood. I tend to use 'square' in a classroom situation where one child is the turtle and is directed by others. I write the directions on the board after the children have guessed and checked them. (The notion of left (lt) and right (rt) is enhanced and well as the 90 degree turn). I then put them into the computer, but they realise straight away that for example fd 6 isn't significant so add a zero and make it fd 60 etc. I also use Microworlds so combine a little bit of programming with painting etc. At times students have copied a simple procedure and just the excitement of them seeing it actually work is worth the while. Even the questioning of why it didn't work is helpful, maybe no space between the words etc, all valuable for later on. Robyn Valentine Manunda Tce.
