I didn't reply to the second half of your question, are simulations
valuable. In some situations they are essential. I sincerely hope that
health workers simulate surgeries and many other procedures before they
are done on a person or animal. In fact, I personally believe that the
best education in nearly every case is to allow (require) the student to
behave as nearly as possible as they would as working models. Maybe
another way of saying it is that I do not believe in art (music,
literature, science, etc.) appreciation courses, but I strongly endorse
music lessons, drawing classes, math courses (the more applied the
better) and so forth. If the student cannot solve a real probelm because
of time, expense or safety, then they should be doing simulations.
