In UK education we now refer to such pencil and paper techniques and 
'written or part written' methods.

The word 'algorithm' tends now to be used for the complete abstract 
process, i.e. that which may form the basis for a Logo procedure, one 
which will carry out the (complex) operations without the need for 
intermediate representational stages as pencil and paper does.
