But we make sure students have good skills and habits when doing math that probably won't be mathematicians. We also make sure chemistry students practice safety that don't plan on being chemists etc etc. I think some of the habits I mentioned are analogous to other sciences and relate to working with other people. Documenting what your doing (comments in the case of programming) and stating your assumptions (error checking in the case of programming). I think one can easily imagine these same good habits applying to Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and even Chemical Engineering etc. All these carriers often involve working in teams and passing your work along to others or part of a larger system that others must interface with. Here are some examples in Electrical Engineering: "Good Comments" in Electrical Engineering would be Good Block Diagrams Well Labeled schematics, Well Labeled PC boards so that another engineer can follow the design. "Good Error Checking" would be Status LEDs/Buzzers, Status LCD panels, Powerup Selftest, Voltage Regulators, Fused Circuits, Parity bits on busses and transmission lines, Test points, Static protection. Like programming these do add cost, can use up precious power, use up space etc. The "engineer" needs to decide what's needed and what's over kill. Now that I think about it, us programmers have it pretty easy :-) -- =============================================================== George Mills email: mills@softronix.com http://www.softronix.com The www page contains some very powerful educational software.
