Critics typically charge that a Net-connected computer is merely a high-tech plaything which more often than not links students to inappropriate or inaccurate information. The complaint goes like this: Access to digital data does not make children better at things like reading, thinking, researching and analyzing problems. One is tempted to ask whether the same couldn’t be said about books, too. But rather than get sarcastic about it, let’s address the basis for the criticism—namely, that there is no scientific evidence establishing a connection between Internet use and learning. I had the good fortune recently to witness just such evidence.
