Hi all --- This is more of a general education/math/learning question rather than a LOGO one but I would really value the input of the list. My question is : What is the role of arithmetic in math above the 6th grade (to be kind of arbitrary) ? What arithmetic is essential to furthur math development above the 6th grade ? What are the core arith goals to allow students to be successful in the core math curriculum as discussed by NCTM ? I bring this up as the last quarter is upon me at school and I begin to look forward to fall of 98 and see the real need to begin the push to algebra for many of my students. I have several 7th and 8th graders who have about a 5th grade computational level but are pretty decent in pattern recognition, reasoning and problem solving and feel the pre alg / alg should be within their grasp. I also have a few in that 6, 7 8 crowd who have 1st or 2nd grade equivalent computations . Consequently, I start to think about placements and groupings for them. Recall: I work with students who have pretty severe learning disibilities in a small classroom (8 max) private setting in the midwest. (Its our 15th Anniversary by the way.) Thanks for any input.
