Greetings Christopher from warm and rainy(what else is new?) Seattle.  

Right off the top, read Mitchel Resnick's "Turtles, Termites, and
Traffic Jams, 1994.  

Then surf to Brian Harvey's web page to read his opposing views.  

But I am on your side and can hardly wait for StarLogo to be ported to
my 586.
