Brian, I thought of the perfect name for your EXTRACT routine.

There is FIRST, LAST and ITEM
There is BUTFIRST, BUTLAST but no BUTITEM

It's crying for that name (which also implies the behavior
and arguments I described, none of that sissy random stuff :-)).

Also of course you need to flip the order of arguments to be
just like ITEM's.

You could add BUTLASTS and BUTITEMS to complete the set.
