I write again with my head hanging low. I'm sheepishly reporting that when I said George's method of eliminating items from a list clearly worked better than Frank's, I was the victim of my own typing mistake. I took another close look at the code where I tested Frank's method, and instead of op (se first :aList remItemFrom :anItem bf :aList) I had written op (se first :anItem remItemFrom :anItem bf :aList) and even I in my cloud of ignorance understand why that would produce the strange result I got! (The code was right in the message I sent to you because I copied it straight from George's letter, whereas I had mistyped it into my program.) My apologies to Frank!
